Backdrops Fantastic Australia finalist for the Australian Event Awards!

Today, Backdrops Fantastic Australia received the news that we have become finalists in the Australian Event Awards in the category of Best Technical Achievement or Innovation. Our nomination was for the very first 3D Augmented Projection Mapping show we achieved with our technical team for the 2015 Connect Conference at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. In August of 2015, Backdrops Fantastic Australia had the opportunity to work with one of our long standing clients Ray White to share in a vision to deliver a corporate event experience to 2,000 attendees with the use of 3D augmented projection mapping. A feat that had not been attempted in the corporate event market space on this scale at over 50 metres wide and nearly 8 metres tall onto our small individual mapping canvas of over 1,100 individual 60cm x 60cm Stealth Modular Panels.

The core technical vision was to bring not only projection mapping into the event space but 3D augmentation where the real world is duplicated digitally and the lines between what is real and what is computer generated are blurred. In our case, the Stealth Modular Panels were animated and projected in such a way each was digitally transformed into a moving, living and breathing immersive event experience!

To highlight the possibilities of 3D augmented mapping we installed over 1,100 Stealth Modular Panels to create a 3D canvas that was seen as something physically real and inclusive. The augmented mapping included clever animations where the wall froze, crumbled or opened to reveal videos and graphics along with various 3D eye candy trickery to dynamically enhance the event.

We were fortunate enough to have enthusiastic event professionals in our team and at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre who went above and beyond to ensure that the highest level of projection mapping equipment was always readily available both in the testing phase as well as on the show. Victor Hugo wrote, nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come. We are so proud the Australian Event Awards has recognised our passionate team’s idea and efforts as a finalist for bringing 3D augmented projection mapping technology of our modular panels to the Australian corporate event industry!

Winners of the Australian Event Awards will be announced at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort on the Sunshine Coast on 21 September 2016.
